The iOS "Trust Developer" Security Rationale

The App Store app is secured by Apple's proactive review and approval (vetting the app's code and behavior). The Enterprise Certificate app is secured by Apple's reactive enforcement (the threat of immediate certificate revocation) and the user's explicit trust in the developer.

If the Enterprise Certificate is revoked, the app will instantly stop functioning on your iPhone or iPad. It will crash every time you try to launch it, as the device's operating system will no longer be able to verify the certificate's authenticity against Apple's servers.

The "Untrusted" label doesn't mean the developer is inherently bad; it simply means the device has encountered a valid Enterprise Certificate from an organization for the first time and has not yet been granted explicit, manual trust by the user. It is the operating system's final, mandatory warning before delegating security responsibility.

Not necessarily more access to the core iOS system, as both are still run within a secure, isolated sandbox. However, since the app bypasses the App Store review, it might not adhere to Apple’s rules on using non-public APIs or engaging in data collection Apple would otherwise prohibit, creating a greater risk to user privacy.

Apple restricts the ADEP to in-house distribution because they mandate that any app distributed to the public (non-employees) must go through the full App Store review process to maintain the ecosystem's high security and quality standards for all consumers.

The "Trust Developer" step means the user is manually creating a trusted relationship between their device and the specific Enterprise Certificate holder, overriding the default lack of trust applied to any software that bypasses the App Store.

It maintains integrity through a digital signature. If the app file (.ipa) is modified in any way after being signed by the certificate holder, the digital signature check fails upon installation, and the device will refuse to open the app.

It refers to the technical requirement that any direct installation of an app outside the App Store must be signed with an Enterprise Certificate, thus forcing the user to manually execute the "Trust Developer" action in Settings to satisfy Apple's cryptographic verification protocols.
